Choosing a First Aid Kit

By Arnold Davies Blog at 2011-01-04 01:26:01
Whether you are a parent, babysitter, or a teacher, having a first aid kit handy for kids is always a good idea. Since children have different needs for first aid care than those of adults, you can make a kid's first aid kit that is appropriate for the little ones. This will ensure that you have everything you need in case of boo-boo's or minor illness. Here are some of the things you should use to make a kid's first aid kit that will have you covered in any emergency.

Before deciding the contents of your first aid kit, list out all activities you commonly participate in. Do you go camping? Do you or any member of your family play contact sports? Are you on the road a lot? Is it for industrial use? How many people is the first aid kit for? It is very important that the first aid kit contents match up to your lifestyle or your workplace environment. Once you have a basic idea of where a first aid kit will come in handy, you can start planning the contents of your kit.

Medical first aid kits and supplies should be placed in good open location, meaning, your kits can be easily seen by anyone inside your home. If you have kids, make sure that they understand the importance and the uses of having first aid kits. You will never know when you will rely on your kids to respond to emergencies, especially those that involve you, so you might as well teach them early on.

Have a basic first aid kit with you. Someone usually has day pack when you go off the beaten path where not a lot of people are seen. Make it standard practice to take a first aid kit with you in that day pack. Carry one in the car. And have one in the house.

Group your medicines and supplies together: This will keep your kit organized, therefore making easy to find the items you need in times of a medical emergency. Keep everything labeled, with dosage information. You don't necessary have to keep brand names of everything, either. It is perfectly acceptable to purchase generic band-aids or bandages and certain topical creams.

Expand your kit or get another kit tailored to the specific activity. I have several kits that I have in different rooms for different activities. One in the shop differs from one in the kitchen and the one in my truck. The one for the firing range is VERY different from these. My kitchen first aid kit does not have sunscreen! Kits do not have to be elaborate, just thought out. Use the technology that is available.

All different types of kits are available but be sure to purchase one with instructions. It is also a good idea to take a basic first aid class. If you have someone with you that has a heart condition you need to know CPR and these classes often include information for how to use that defibrillator, as it doesn't do much good to have it if you don't know how to use it.

You can also make your own first aid by buying some of the items or by looking around your home for the things, you want to put inside it. Various families have their own version of the kit so feel free to put whatever you deem is necessary for you. If you want to purchase a kit that has everything you need, you can also do that. Drugstores or pharmacies and shops specializing in medical needs usually sell ready-made kits.

In order to select a first aid kit, review the different sizes and what is included. Judge what things you may need to include on top what is in there already. Check expiration dates on all your supplies and be sure to replace what is used so as never to be caught without the tools necessary help those you love in case of an emergency.
