How to Plan a Healthy Pregnancy Diet

The period of pregnancy is one of vacillating emotions like tears and laughter, change in physical appearance, encountering unexpected health challenges and so on. But all of it seems worthwhile to you since you are eagerly awaiting the arrival of your child! Of course, you can expect to deliver a healthy baby only if you strictly adhere to a balanced and nutritious diet.

Designing your pregnancy diet plan is easier than you think. Simply adjust your regular everyday diet to incorporate and satisfy extra nutritional needs.

A good pregnancy diet plan would include food items that are high in fiber such as whole wheat bread, as well as lots of fluids like water, fruit juice and milk, as part of its program. It should also include a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products like eggs, cheese and yogurt, and sources of folic acid, a nutrient that is essential during pregnancy.

Especially in your first trimester, you may have difficulty eating because of nausea and morning sickness. Therefore, your pregnancy diet plan should include small meals eaten frequently instead of large meals eaten infrequently. In addition, you may have some digestive problems such as heartburn because of your pregnancy, and eating small meals will also help keep this at bay.

Fish containing mercury should be immediately eliminated from your diet as mercury has been linked to birth defects and brain damage. Canned tuna in moderation should be okay to consume while you are pregnant as it contains only small traces of mercury.

Other foods to eat while pregnant that contain Omega-3s include limited amounts of low-mercury seafood that contains high levels of Omega-3s, such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies.

To reduce your risk of gestational diabetes, eliminate sugar, processed foods, junk food and artificial sweeteners from your diet. All of these things are unhealthy because they can contribute to weight gain, damage your health and raise your blood-sugar levels. Instead of eating these foods, fill your pregnancy diet with complex carbohydrates, high fiber foods, lean meats, poultry and fish.

So, you can see how important it is to eat right during your pregnancy to potentially prevent future health problems for both you and your child. The kinds of food you're eating and how much weight you gain during pregnancy can impact you and your newborn's health later in life.

Did you know that a part of your diet will get into your baby's amniotic fluid through the placenta? This means your baby could taste what you are eating. Your baby will swallow this amniotic fluid and the flavors you eat will be picked up by your baby as their taste buds have developed enough to taste.
