My parents were good parents because they were forward looking. They kept one eye to the future and prepared us. When we left our parents home, we did so with confidence because we were well equipped to cope with the world. We knew how to work. We knew how to handle money. We knew how to stand up for our beliefs. We knew how to treat others fairly. We knew to expect little from the world and to expect much from ourselves.

Firstly, make sure you have a good relationship with your child before you ever try to discipline them. Discipline should always be from a base of love and understanding. If you do not listen to your child, don't expect them to listen to you. Parenting is a two way street. We need to establish a relationship of trust with our children. They need to know that we are available to talk to them when they need to talk about things.

All too often it is easier for parents to say there is nothing to be scared of or that there is no reason for them to be mad. To learn how to be a good parent you will need to accept their feelings, which includes acknowledging their feelings. For example, tell them it is o.k. to be sad that their friend had to go home. Telling them it is o.k. to feel a certain way is great parenting because you are showing your child it is o.k. for them to have their own feelings and desires.

Raising good children is also a function of good marriage. The two are not separate. It's not a race to the finish line. It's more like a stroll. The idea behind great parenting translates into being a support for the child.

Be Strict with your Children - As you are the only one who teaches your child that what is good and what is bad, so don't be so lenient in several serious matters.

Tell them as often as you can that they are loved. Some children go through their growing years and seldom hear such words from their parents; this can be quite damaging to them, to say the least. You can show your love in all kinds of ways; give them hugs before they head out to school, leave little notes in their lunch bags, respect their privacy, and so on. When they know that you care deeply about them, they will show you the same in return, making for a happy family.

Successful parenting not only involves intelligent vision for where you are going and where you want your child to end up, but it requires an understanding of the tools. Parents have an amazing "tool box" of effective strategies which help mould their child's life.

Be the example- Your child is going to the things that you do. That is why it is important to always be the good example to your child. When you show the example, you gain a better relationship. You are not yelling at your child and your child is not yelling at you. That is the interesting part about it. You need to be the example to explain better the good parenting rules and regulations.

Another way you can partner with your child's school is to volunteer your time on a regular basis. Some school welcome volunteers to assist in the class, it might be for reading sessions, arts and crafts or a simple sing-a-long session. Volunteering in your child's school has many benefits; it also boosts your child's morale when you take an interest in their work.
