How to Clean Makeup Brushes

By Arnold Davies Blog at 2010-12-16 04:27:22
Knowing how to clean makeup brushes is key to perfect cosmetic application. Clean brushes ensure that best possible application, which means you present your best you to the world. When a makeup brush is used, makeup sticks to each bristle. Not only that, but dirt, oil and dead skin cells build up on every inch of the instrument.

Take a paper towel and wipe the brush. You can do this by wrapping the paper towel around the brush. While applying pressure with the thumb and fingers on one hand, pull the brush through the paper towel with your other hand. You can also sweep the tips of the brush across the paper towel, as if you were trying to paint the paper towel.

Brushes should be cleaned as often as you have time for. Ideally, a clean after every application would be perfect however, a woman's schedule in today's world may not allow for this. Set some time aside at least every week to clean your most used brushes and those you use over large surfaces of your face like your foundation, blush and powder brushes.

Once your brush is clean, run it under the tap again, making sure to wash out all of the soap and bacteria. Massage the bristles with your fignertips, running from base to tip, however be gentle and don't pull hard on the hairs. Continue rinsing under the tap until the water runs clean and all traces of soap are gone.

There is not always time to thoroughly wash brushes. If you are short on time, tap the excess makeup from your brush then wipe it down with a baby wipe. Spraying brushes with a quick drying cleanser made especially for makeup brushes is also an option. Just spray, then wipe excess makeup and bacteria away with a tissue or napkin.

A perfect blusher blush should have a full head of slightly tapered brushes for even and natural distribution of blush pigments. The small brushes that often comes with the blush are oftentimes too hard bristled that they pick up more pigments than necessary.

To wash your natural bristle mineral makeup brush, pour a little shampoo, hand wash soap or any antibacterial in a bowl and add some warm water. Then swirl the soap and water together before swirling your bristles in the soapy water, take care not to wet the handle or soak the handle. Keep swirling your bristles in the soapy water for about 2 minutes.

It's also important to note that natural fiber brushes will hold up well, and will not cause any skin irritation. Dead skin cells and makeup residue should be removed from your brushes every few weeks by cleaning your makeup brushes in warm, sudsy water.

You'll also want to keep makeup brushes in a clean bag or container in an environment that is free of moisture, store them somewhere they won't be crushed by other products. If any of the brushes in your set wear out they won't be expensive to replace either.
