How To Get Baby To Sleep At Night

By Arnold Davies Blog at 2010-12-14 04:32:25
As any Thanksgiving will show, people generally get sleepy after eating. This happens because your blood sugar levels change and because your body pushes blood to your stomach, thus taking it away from your brain. Babies are no different.

You have to set a routine as soon as possible. It is the single most effective tool you can use to get your baby to sleep through the night or with newborns for longer periods during the night. I can't stress enough that babies love routine. Right so what routine can you use to help get your baby to sleep and why is a routine so effective? Your routine can consist of anything you want, but you can try the following routine as an example.

Darkness and light are a brand new concept, and many mothers make the mistake of assuming that their newborn will inherently know when it's time to lay down for the night and when it's time to get up in the morning. Not so. Babies have to be taught these things, and the best training you can give them will include a set schedule that you both must adhere to.

Many babies wake up because of hunger and because they are used to being fed in the hospital every four hours. Once you get your baby home, you can either continue in this manner or allow the baby to sleep as long as they can without waking them to be fed. If you feed them as much as they want just before putting the down for the night, they will have a full belly and are more apt to begin sleeping through the night.

It is important that you stick to this for a several nights. Babies will often cry for a shorter period of time each night until eventually, the baby will learn how to sleep through the night. Be careful not to give in. Even if the baby has cried for an hour before you pick her up, you still must resist the temptation if at all possible. All this is going to do is teach her that you will pick her up if she cries long enough.

Babies wake at night mainly to be fed. Sometimes they are unwell or too hot but it is usually to be fed. A baby's stomach is the size of your fist and if you are breastfeeding, which is best for your baby, your milk will absorbed much quicker than formula milk. About 90 minutes is normal for digestion, and then your baby may need fed again!

Another common mistakes it letting the baby fall asleep in your arms. If you continually do this, you will form a bad habit and every time the baby wakes up, it will need to you to cuddle it to sleep, you don't want this.

We all have some kind of routine before we go to sleep and your baby should too. Sometimes a sleep routine could begin with a bath, followed by a slow dimming of the lights, then a change of nappy, putting them in the crib and finishing with a bedtime story.

Do not let your baby see or feel you get agitated or affected by his crying. Often when a child sees this it tells him his parents might weaken and allow him to get away with things. If you have to, step away for a minute and take a breather. Be sure your baby is in a safe place while you do this.

Night terrors and nightmares - They sound similar but are actually quite different. Babies will wake up frightened after a nightmare. They may act frightened when they are experiencing night terrors but are not awake. In any case they need to be comforted.

Most parents like following a simple bedtime ritual of bathing their babies then reading to them. This helps them to relax. Babies are creatures of habit. These rituals help them to make this association with sleep. Consistent bedtimes and going to sleep rituals get baby to sleep easier and they stay asleep longer.
