Dealing With Toddler Tantrums

By Arnold Davies Blog at 2011-02-17 03:11:33
Toddlers can be fun as they start to be curious about the many things surrounding them. When your child ages one to three years old, they tend to become interested in many things and they start to imitate you. Thus, it is important at this stage to keep an eye on them and learn how to deal with toddler's tantrums and behavior.

When dealing with toddler tantrums, adults often lose sight that this is not a battle of the wills. It is the toddler having the meltdown and you need not join in. If you lose your cool, chances are the tantrum will only increase in length and you will have your own regret for regressing in your own behavior. Shouting at a shouting toddler is not going to work. Take a breath; walk away, count to ten.

Make your home a safe place for your toddler. You may not totally stop a toddler from exploring things, climbing furniture and discovering things around them as these are part of her development. However, it will not be good as well to leave your toddler unsupervised while they do their thing. You can deal with this putting away things that can hurt him, fix broken furniture, cover electric plugs, keep cleaning products out of his reach and keep a watchful eye over him.

If you follow the 3 easy suggestions below, you will be helping your kids develop emotional strength and a feeling of confidence in their abilities to handle their own lives. If you label their lives as sad or unlucky, they will believe you. Youngsters who are overprotected lack the confidence to handle their own emotions or cope with tricky circumstances. When everybody is calm, speak with your kids about the things which upset them.

Another situation that causes toddler meltdown occurs when an object is snatched away from him. Taking away something of danger or something that is totally inappropriate for a child to have is certainly justifiable; however, give him something in its place. Never take away an object without giving him something else to play with. Even though he is a little person, he still has feelings. Respect them.

PRAISE: When the child has settled down and complies with your wishes or commands give the child praise. Make sure that the child knows what he is being praised for. A "good boy" or "good girl" does not work. Include in your praise an description of the good behavior.

Do take no notice of people staring at you in public. You should not have a feeling that people may be thinking you to be bad parent but that's not true. This is very natural and everyone knows and have undergone through this situation while parenting.

Avoid the 4 main causes of tantrums; hunger, boredom, over-stimulation and boredom. You can accomplish this by simply making sure that your child is well fed, has healthy snacks, is on a stable sleeping schedule, and try to have books or toys that stimulate their mind.
